The Moth: Refitting a Traditional Hudson Narrowboat

What was the goal of this project?

The transformation of Moth began with the purchase of a much-loved Steve Hudson narrowboat, Rendezvous, through Lakeland Leisure Boat Sales. The new owner had a vision: to preserve the traditional soul of the boat while completely reimagining its interior to reflect their unique style. Working closely with the team at Kingsground Narrowboats, the goal was to turn this classic 61ft 11in tug-deck vessel into a warm, inviting floating home—retaining the charm of her original character while adding all the modern comforts needed for relaxed cruising and liveaboard life.

Where did the inspiration for the design come from?

Moth’s refit was inspired by a love for classic narrowboat style combined with bold interior choices and rich, tactile materials. The standout feature—a vibrant red galley—set the tone for a confident, expressive fit-out that didn’t shy away from charactr. Every material, from the oak leaf bathroom tiles (originally designed for Kingsground’s Highgrove) to the gleaming copper diesel stove, was chosen to enhance the boat’s cosy, lived-in feel while still offering modern functionality. The project also honoured Moth’s heritage. As a Steve Hudson build, she carried traditional details and painted embellishments that were carefully preserved and enhanced as part of the refit. The approach balanced sentimentality with a practical update, celebrating history while reimagining the space for the present.

What were the standout features of this build?

Moth’s charm lies in its seamless blend of traditional character and contemporary comfort. Key features include: The Bold Red Galley: Deep red cabinetry contrasts beautifully with warm timber tones and quartz-style surfaces, adding drama and richness to the space. Lockgate Copper Diesel Stove: Acting as the heart of the boat, the striking copper finish adds both warmth and visual flair to the saloon area. Oak Leaf Pattern Tiles: Originally created for Kingsground’s Highgrove, these tiles bring heritage, elegance, and texture into Moth’s bathroom. Crafted Interiors: Handcrafted wooden panelling, bespoke porthole blinds, and a palette of warm tones create a cosy, character-rich atmosphere throughout. Respect for Heritage: Painted detailing on hatches and doors was preserved, offering a nod to Moth’s past while sitting comfortably alongside modern upgrades.

Were there any challenges during the project?

The biggest challenge was the scale of transformation required to convert a traditionally styled tug into a warm, stylish, and contemporary home without stripping away the boat’s identity. The team had to carefully dismantle and rebuild the interior from the shell, managing a complete reconfiguration of spaces while maintaining structural integrity and balance. Another key consideration was transportation logistics—moving the boat from Tattenhall Marina to Kingsground’s workshop required precision planning, lifting, and haulage, but the process was handled smoothly by both teams. The completed Moth has been celebrated as a true example of how a traditional boat can be thoughtfully reimagined for modern living. The owner’s vision was realised beautifully—bringing together character, comfort, and clever design. The boat’s transformation has already inspired others considering renovations of their own, showing just how much potential lies in high-quality heritage shells like those built by Steve Hudson. Moth stands as proof that with the right builder and a clear design vision, any narrowboat can be given a vibrant second life.
